What is a Signature Lift?
This is a facial rejuvenation procedure that Dr. Castellano has evolved his practice to over thousands of cosmetic cases. Performed in approximately 90 minutes, this procedure produces instant results that look natural and avoids the risks and recovery of general anesthesia. Some patients choose to add eyelid procedures or facial fillers to complement their Signature Lift result.
What is a facelift?
A basic definition is the tightening skin and muscle around the neck and jowl area to improve the signs of aging. This is typically performed through an incision that is in front and behind the ear, often extending into the hairline of the temple and the hairline behind the ear. Keep in mind that not all surgeons or facelifts are created equal. Saying you had a facelift done is like saying you did landscaping to your front-yard. When you say that you are "landscaping", that could mean you did very little, or that you overhauled everything. The same holds true for facial plastic surgery. What one surgeon may call a mini-lift, another surgeon may call the same procedure a full facelift, and vice versa.
So, because of differences in opinion, training, experience level, and individual patient anatomy, it becomes very difficult, if not impossible, to accurately compare facial procedures that are offered by different surgeons, even if the surgeons work for the same practice or the same company. It is a commonly held philosophy that the best facial rejuvenation is one that is generally tailored to four different categories: 1. Anatomy, 2. Degree of improvement desired by the patient, 3. Amount of recovery the patient will tolerate, and 4. Amount of money the patient wants to spend. Typically, a more aggressive surgical procedure may be recommended for someone that has a very large neck.
Hence, this will result in a greater degree of improvement, yet would potentially require a longer recovery, and perhaps more expense. This is in contrast to a younger patient that may not have much neck or jowl tissue. This patient would do well to have less of a procedure, resulting in less improvement, less recovery, and probably less expense. Remember, the most aggressive result is not favorable if the patient looks unnatural after the procedure.
What can I do to improve my recovery?
The most important thing you can do is to follow all of your doctor's instructions. If you have a question about any aspect of your care, you should call the office to clarify and make sure you are following directions. Keeping your head elevated, icing your wounds, and minimizing your activity will help to minimize your swelling. Studies have shown that arnica Montana and Bromeline (found in pineapple) can reduce swelling and bruising. Be sure to discuss this with your physician before choosing this treatment.
How much time should I take off after the procedure?
This is variable, depending on how much of a procedure you choose to have. Some patients that choose minimal procedures may return to their activities in a few days, though it is often a good idea to have extra time set aside just in case you need it. Typically, you do not want to engage in strenuous activity or get your heart rate up with exercise until after your sutures are removed at a one-week follow-up. Ultimately, this is a decision your doctor will make based on how your recovery is progressing.
Would I need to quit smoking before the procedure?
It is generally advised to quit smoking before your procedure to improve your chances of favorable healing. Essentially, the nicotine causes the blood vessels to constrict, decreasing the blood flow to your wounds. Oxygen and nutrients are needed for wound healing, so your healing may be delayed if you are a smoker. Surgeons will vary on the amount of time they require their patients to cut back or quit before and after a procedure.
Generally speaking, the less smoking you do for 4 weeks before and after a facelift or cosmetic procedure, you will probably decrease your chances of delayed healing or infection. Completely quitting the use of tobacco is the best. Mini-facelifts can be better suited for some patients that smoke as the risk of complications can be higher with a more extensive dissection for a full facelift.
